in her own character sketches and The Barney Gilbraith Swing
Quartet
Elspeth Douglas-Reid , who is a Scot, began writing her sketches some years ago when teaching elocution and acting in South Africa. Encouraged by success in Johannesburg, she threw up her job at the Conservatoire of Music there and returned to this country deciding to turn her talent to account here. She gets her ideas from watching ordinary people going about their daily business, and jotting down what she hears on envelopes.
Barney Gilbraith in giving the first BBC broadcast with his swing quartet in June this year introduced listeners to an unusually versatile swing combination. The four players are Barney Gilbraith, accordion ; Reg Conroy , piano and vibraphone ; ' Hank ' Hobson, bass ; and Dudley Barber , drums.
