Anne Wood (contralto)
BBC Symphony Orchestra
(Leader, Paul Beard )
Conductor, Sir Malcolm Sargent
The works by Edmund Rubbra and Lennox Berkeley were commissioned by the Third Programme for Coronation Week. The first of the three poems chosen by Rubbra is taken from an ode ' Upon the King's Coronation '; the second is ' To the Queen: Entertained at Night by the Countess of Anglesey '; the last is from ' A Relation of the Late Royal Entertainment given by the Right Honourable the Lord Knowles at Cawsome House near Reading to our most gracious Queene, Queene Anne, 1613.' Berkeley's Suite though it makes use of rhythms characteristic of old Elizabethan dances, is a work thoroughly representative of its composer. H.R.
