Preserving the Land of the Morning Calm

on BBC Radio 3

First of two programmes exploring the musical culture of South Korea. A victim of war and occupation, South Korea had been devastated and its culture virtually stamped out. But now it has become an economic force to be reckoned with - and with this has come a revival of its traditional arts and music, helped by a preservation scheme set up by the government. Keith Howard examines this system where people, as well as monuments, are designated as "cultural assets". Producer Emma Kingsley
