In 1938 Margaret Shepherd, newly married and highly qualified as a surgeon, went to India to work with her husband, also a surgeon. Her parents, in Westmorland, preserved the letters she wrote home every week and her niece Elizabeth Bond has drawn on them to construct a picture of her aunt's unusual career
