Richard Forbush is a brilliant young biologist - and conceited philanderer - who, to impress a beautiful girl, goes to the Antarctic to study penguins.
John Hurt plays the reluctant adventurer who sets off in style, determined to live in as much luxury as possible - and finds for the first time in his life, in the frozen wastes, something to think of other than himself.
