Studies of the media are an established branch of sociology. Researchers have investigated such matters as the effects of political broadcasting, the production process. the attitudes of professional broadcasters. But the latter have, on the whole, been sceptical of the value to them of such reports. Have they themselves better sources of information about the audience's response, or better antennae?
