4: Benny Carter in conversation with Charles Fox
In his time Benny Carter has mastered seven instruments, although he is now best known for his alto playing. In the late 20s, he played in the bands of Charlie Johnson and Fletcher Henderson. before starting his own orchestra. He spent several years in Europe during the 30s, first working with the Willie Lewis Band and then arranging for Henry Hall 's BBC Dance
Orchestra. After his return to the States in 1938, Carter once again took up band-leading, but eventually concentrated on writing. In recent years he has resumed playing - trumpet as well as alto. Producer DEREK DRESCHER (First broadcast in 1977)
