Composer of the Week: Sibelius

on BBC Radio 3

Jeremy Hayes continues his exploration of Sibelius's theatre music and symphonic poems with the last part of his ambitious pantomime-drama Scaramouche, in which a beautiful woman is seduced by a hunchbacked viola player. There is an excerpt from the unpublished music for The Lizard, an early recording conducted by one of Sibelius's most important interpreters, and a tone poem which tells the story of the creation of the world according to Finnish mythology. Suite: Belshazzar's Feast
London Symphony Orchestra, conductor Robert Kajanus Scaramouche (Final Scene)
Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra, conductor Neeme Jarvi
Incidental music: The Lizard (excerpt) Ostrobothnian Chamber Orchestra, conductor Juha Kangas Luonnotar
Elisabeth Soderstrom (soprano), Philharmonia, conductor Vladimir Ashkenazy Repeated from last Tuesday
