THE ARCTIC TODAY-TWENTY YEARS OF BRITISH EXPLORATION

on National Programme Daventry

View in Radio Times

2—' Endeavours in the Past'
Raymond E. Priestley , D.Sc.
Dr. Priestley, who is now Vice-Chancellor and Principal of Birmingham University, was a member of two expeditions to the Antarctic-Shackleton's in the Nimrod in 1907-9, and Scott's famous one of 1910-13, in which he was one of the Northern party. His connection with recent exploration in the North is a very real one, because it was largely due to his enthusiasm and a set of lectures he was giving in Cambridge after the war that Britain's younger generation of explorers became inspired to travel there.
In tonight's talk Dr. Priestley is going to look at Northern exploration in the past, and show how motives and methods have changed with the years in the long endeavour to conquer and harness the region.
