An account of the Durham Miners'
Gala by two of the crowd
The annual miners' gala at Durham is one of the great holidays in the North-East. Thousands of miners come into the town, meetings are held. and the miners march in a long procession, carrying the banners of their lodges, to Durham Cathedral, where a service is held. Brass bands play the hymns, which are sung by a huge congregation.
