Shura Cherkassky
Few people have aroused such affection and admiration as the idiosyncratic pianist Shura Cherkassky (1911-1995). Even fewer have been able to combine novelty with high artistry. In conversation with Bryce Morrison and with archive contributions from the whimsical pianist himself,
Jeremy Nicholas presents a radio portrait of a unique keyboard phenomenon. The programme includes excerpts from the earliest recordings he made at the age of 14 and his last in 1995, plus his 80thbirthday recital at New York's Carnegie Hall. Producer Verity Sharp
