Powder Her Face

on BBC Radio 3

The operatic debut of British composer Thomas Ades , to a libretto by Philip Hensher , was hailed as one of the events of the decade.
Inspired by incidents in the life of Margaret, Duchess of Argyll, it charts the decline and fall of a famous society beauty as she waits to be evicted from her hotel room. In this first broadcast performance, the composer conducts the cast of the original Almeida Opera production. Introduced by Chris de Souza.
