In 1837 at Wotton-under-Edge, Sir Isaac Pitman , then a young school-master, originated a method of brief writing that had an absolutely phonetic basis. The invention revolutionised the art of shorthand. I- J. Pitman , who makes the speech of the evening, is the grandson of the inventor.
