There have been few more skilful theatrical craftsmen in our time than Edward Knoblock. Although much of his most successful work has been in collaboration-with Arnold Bennett in Milestones and with J. B: Priestley in the play of The Good Companions, to take but two examples-his own plays include such outstanding successes as the oriental fantasy Kismet and My Lady's Dress. The latter, to be broadcast tonight for the first time. was first produced at the Royalty Theatre, London, in 1914 with Gladys Cooper and later Isobel Elsom in the principal role. It was revived six years later, with Gladys Cooper again leading the cast, at the Royalty and Playhouse Theatres. As -Anne, Annette, Antje, Annie, Anna, and Anita, a girl in a dream becomes the central figure of a series of episodes. light or tragic, through which she traces the history of her new dress and of the hands through which it has passed before she puts it on. This ingenious theme should offer many opportunities to an actress of Fay Compton 's range and emotional power.
