'A man with one theory is lost, he needs several of them, four, lots!'
(Bertolt Brecht Diaries 1920-22)
John Fuegi, Professor of Comparative Literature at the University of Maryland, has been reading new translations of Brecht's Diaries and of Klaus Volker's Brecht: a Biography. He suggests that previous theories about Brecht's life offer a partial picture of the man and reflects on new aspects of Brecht which these works present.
