While riding over to visit Mr. Ackroyd at Gossington Hall with Joanna, Martin suddenly discovers that her father, Sir Charles, is Third Secretary at the Admiralty; leaving her, he rides off to try and see Sir Charles before he leaves Hindleford for London. Shortly after, Sir Charles is stopped-by a highwayman whose main interest seems to be centred on the luggage rather than on trinkets. It is then that Martin tells Jo about certain papers an agent of England gave to him in Boulogne.....
