Every year most of us consume three pounds of ' flavours, colours, antioxidants, emulsifiers and preservatives '. We have been led to believe that these chemical additives are an unavoidable part of our industrialised way of life with its demand for ' convenience ' foods. But are additives truly indispensable? Do we know enough about the effects they may have on our health? Who is responsible for approving their use? Could we live without them?
