Music Restored

on BBC Radio 3

Warlock. Lucie Skeaping delves into the Elizabethan archives of the British
Museum in a programme devoted to the editing talents of Philip Heseltine (Peter Warlock ). A collection of 16th-century oddities by Thomas Whythorne , Captain Tobias Hume , Thomas Campion , Martin Peerson and Thomas Ravenscroft , all of whom were more or less unknown until
Heseltine rediscovered them during the 1920s, when he pored over the manuscripts and tablatures kept in Britain's libraries and museums. Thanks to his tireless editing and his talent for promotion, we now have performable versions of some of the Elizabethan period's most extraordinary madrigals, lute songs, rounds and catches.
