A programme for children under five
Nursery rhymes, stories, and music
'The world is so full of a number of things' - and that is what makes it such a strenuous place for under-fives. No wonder they need to rest so often upon the familiar things, to reassure themselves about what they know; no wonder, too, that they enjoy different stories about the same people, as a rest from constantly meeting new ones.
Hence the various series of stories that appear in our programmes from time to time. Among those best loved by our small listeners are Ursula Hourihane's tales of Benjamin and Muffet, to be told again this week by Julia Lang.
Benjamin Bear and Muffet the kitten live together in affectionate harmony. They win affection from others as much for their own lovable qualities as for their kindly deeds. They overcome difficulties too, as when they return Baby Rook to his nest.
How welcome to the small child is the safety and security of this story world; and how reassuring its suggestion that the real world may not prove unmanageable and quite beyond his powers!
