It is well known that No. 11 of the Enigma Variation., G.R.S., was inspired by G. R. Sinclair', bulldog. Elgar wrote various themes inspired by or dedicated to Dan, and Professor Westrup relates these to their sometimes surprising contexts in his compositions.
