Denys Hay speaks about the last volume of Steven Runciman 's History of the Crusades, which has recently been published. The speaker, who is Lecturer in History at Edinburgh University, considers some of the reasons for the death of the crusading movement and suggests that it marks the point when the idea of Christendom withered and the idea of Europe gathered momentum.
