But many head teachers are abandoning Christmas carols and nativity plays - they say that the religious requirements are now out-of-date in a secular, multi-faith society.
Some groups want more radical changes: Muslim parents are agitating for their own state-financed schools, while Christian fundamentalists are rejecting the state system outright.
