MANCHESTER NOVEMBER HANDICAP

on National Programme Daventry

View in Radio Times

A commentary on the race by Victor Smythe , with J. Lawson Topham as race-reader at the Grand Stand, and Richard North at the Half Mile Post from Castle Irwell, Manchester
Year after year the flat season is wound up at Manchester, and once again listeners are to hear a running commentary on the last important handicap on the flat until the Lincoln starts the new season next spring.
The Manchester November Handicap is run over 1 mile 4 furlongs at Castle Irwell, the course right-handed, a straight run-in of five and a half furlongs, the going generally soft.
Provided visibility is good (mists at this time of year are to be expected, and before now the race has been abandoned through fog), it is an admirable race from a commentator's point of view, because from his position on top of the Grand Stand he can see all round the course. The start is on the far side, opposite the Grand Stand. A second commentator will be stationed at a point five furlongs from the 'finish.
Last year's race was won by Solitaire from Velvet Cushion and Marcus Superbus.
