Michael Berkeley talks to the historian Niall Ferguson, whose writings range from a history of the Rothschild banking empire to an analysis of the causes and effects of the First World War, and most recently, a study of the complex relationship between politics and economics. Niall Ferguson spent some time in Germany as a student and his musical choices pay tribute to German culture, especially the music of Schubert, Beethoven and Wagner; but he acknowledges his Scottish origins in two songs by Robert Burns and his passion for jazz with a piece by Cannonball Adderley.
