Khachaturian's first ballet was called "Happiness" and incorporated folk elements garnered on a trip to Armenia in 1939. Seemingly in line with the tenets of Socialist Realism, mining Armenian material became the composer's regular recourse - yet even here, politics proved never to be far away.
