Nearly 2,000 years after a donkey carried Mary into Bethlehem, this archetypal beast of burden remains the only means of transport for many in the developing world. Frequently forced to carry loads heavier than themselves over long distances and in searing heat, many donkeys spend their short lives exhausted, hungry and sick.
