Chicago 1932 -a period of depression, gangsterdom and corruption. Thomas Farrell , a crippled lawyer, earns his living by protecting the gang leader Rico Angelo and other crooks. When Farrell is persuaded by his girlfriend Vicki to go to Europe for an operation, he decides that on his return he will start a legitimate practice. But his underworld connections have different ideas....
Director Ray, brilliantly evokes the sleazy period and pays homage to the classic gangster movies of the past.
