Florence: Musical May Paul Vaughan visits the 47th Maggio Musicale , Italy's oldest music festival, which opened on May Day with a city-wide series of musical and sonorous happenings involving bands, choirs, roller skaters, church bells and sirens composed by the Festival's director Luciano Berio.
The main operatic event is a production of Verdi's
Rigoletto directed by Yuri Lyubimov , whose production of Crime and Punishment was staged in London last year.
