In 1976 the United States was celebrating 200 years of independence. Among the millions of visitors crowding into Philadelphia - the 'birthplace of the Nation' - were 2,500 members of the American Legion attending their annual convention. After a busy programme of convivial meetings these happy veterans went home - unaware that within a few days many of them would be dead, and many more fighting for their lives.
