Although Valentin Alkan was one of the leading piano virtuosos of the 19th century, his output as a composer of piano works has been largely overlooked by his own and subsequent generations.
Alkan's biographer, pianist Ronald Smith with Marc-Andre Hamelin and John Lenehan put the record straight and place Alkan on the musical map.
