Knife to the Heart: The Man with the Golden Hands

on BBC One London

The first of four programmes about transplant surgery

In 1967 a South African surgeon, Christiaan Barnard, removed the heart of a woman killed in a road accident and transplanted it into a dying man. The operation heralded the start of a disastrous year in the history of transplantation. This programme is a vivid account of the operation and the tumultuous year that followed it.
