Douglas Lilburn , who was born at Wanganui, New Zealand, in 1915, studied at the University of Christchurch and later at the Royal College of Music, London, with Vaughan Williams and R. 0. Morris. In 1949 he was awarded the Cobbett Prize for his Fantasy Quartet. His First Symphony was written between 1946 and 1948, although the composer says that some of the material dates from earlier years.
