Eight programmes on aspects of the evolution of contemporary China
2: Nationalism and the Search for Renewal: 1912-1949 by PROFESSOR OWEN LATTIMORE of the University of Leeds
Overthrowing the old empire was one thing; finding a new political form for China was much harder. More than thirty years of disorder and civil war followed. The Japanese assault gave Chinese nationalism a new strength; it also gave the Communists an opportunity to lead this nationalism and offer their system as an answer to China's needs.
