The British Library's newspaper collection at Colindale's is without rival. On 18 miles of shelving, it holds over half a million fat volumes of old newspapers, dating from around 1800. It's tricky getting a seat in the stylish 1930s reading rooms - they fill soon after the doors open, then silence, as the back numbers, old issues and final editions cast their spell.
