in her own character sketches
Elspeth Douglas-Reid a Scots-woman, began writing sketches some years ago when she was teaching elocution and acting at the Conservatoire of Music in Johannesburg, South Africa. The first of her sketches that was staged appeared in the programme as being by an anonymous author ; she was afraid to put her name to it, believing that it was sure to be a failure. A dramatic critic came round afterwards to ask whom the sketch was by, and it was then that she.found courage enough to abandon her anonymity. The critic advised her to go on writing and that was the beginning of her present successful career as an author.
