Great Britons

on BBC One London

1: Horatio Nelson
Written and presented by the distinguished historian of Trafalgar David Howarth
In all Britain's long nautical history there has been no one to compare with Nelson. He was a legend among his sailors in his lifetime. No hero died more splendidly - on his own flagship at the height of his greatest sea battle. Britain's navy-indeed all navies - have held him in honour ever since. Yet his private life created a scandal which dogged his reputation for decades after his death.
In this programme DAVID HOWARTH takes a more charitable view of this brilliant but fallible man and claims that his supreme quality was not his genius as a strategist and commander but his kindness and his remarkable capacity to inspire affection.
