A journey through the literatures of Europe. 7: Austria. Julian Evans continues the monthly series exploring the connections between European novel writers and the art of story-telling. This month he looks at the cultural milieu of inter-war Austria and the work of the self-confessed vivisectionist of modern culture, Robert Musil. Writing between the defeat of Austria in the First World War and the descent into fascism, Musil's sprawling masterpiece A Man without Qualities anticipated, in style and content, many of the dilemmas of the 20th century. From a concentration camp on the Yugoslavian border, via Freud's study and the coffee houses of Vienna, Julian Evans , with the help of contemporary Austrian authors, goes in search of the past and the future of the Austrian novel.
