Composer of the Week: Puccini

on BBC Radio 3

With Daniel Snowman.
Exotica, Erotica. Puccini enjoyed the challenge of placing each of his operas in a different time or place from his own and was especially stimulated by setting his love stories in what were to him exotic locations - such as fin-de-siècle Japan or California during the gold rush. As a composer, he was constantly setting himself new artistic goals.
Elsewhere, he also liked to master the latest kind of motor boat or automobile, despite a serious crash that left him with a lifelong limp. Repeated next Wednesday 12 midnight
