What If ... William Webb-Ellis Had Been Penalised for Handball?

on Radio 5

In 1823, so the story goes, William Webb-Ellis broke the rules of football and invented what we now call rugby. Thanks to him we have words like "scrum", rude songs in the bath and a reason to respect New Zealand. Julian Worricker ponders a world without rugby with Bill Beaumont , Eddie Butler and a man who thinks that without the game women still wouldn't have the vote.
