John and the King of the Zulus by ADRIAN RELD
John is desperate to rise socially among the British colony of Natal in the mid-19th century, but he is hampered by his humble origins. When circumstances lead to a friendship with the Zulu leader, Cetshwayo, John seizes the opportunity of enriching himself as Cetshwayo's righthand man. Then the British authorities step in with a plan.
