Uncle Vanya by Anton Chekhov was presented earlier this year at the Royal Exchange Theatre in Manchester, with a cast which included Albert Finney as Astrov, Leo McKern as Vanya, Eleanor Bron as Elena, Joanna David as Sonia and Alfred Burke as Serebryakov.
Michael Elliott, who directed the play, describes, with recordings made during the rehearsals, how the production grew and was shaped.
