Miles Kington celebrates 150 years of Punch magazine with contributions from, among others, Alan Coren , Bill Tidy, Sir
Clement Freud , Melvyn Bragg and Thelwell. The magazine was founded in 1841, with Z25 capital, by the engraver
Ebenezer Landells and the journalist Henry Mayhew. Its own advance publicity described it as a 'refuge for destitute wit, an asylum for thousands of orphan jokes'. Over the years the editors have included
Sir Francis Bumand , Sir Owen Seaman , Malcolm Muggeridge and William Davis.
