Afternoon on 3

on BBC Radio 3

Introduced by Fiona Talkington. Radio 3 Lunchtime Concert
Secret Bach
A recital of solo cello music by Bach recorded in the mysterious Rosslyn Chapel near Edinburgh. Danjulo Ishizaka (cello)
Bach Suites for solo cello: No 4 in E flat, BWV1010; No 5 in C minor, BWV1011
2.00 Vatery Gergiev
2/5. Valery Gergiev conducts Tchaikovsky's most underrated symphony. He also reaches the denouement of Berlioz's Benvenuto Cellini : the heroic sculptor frantically battles against time and enemies to get his mould-breaking statue cast against all the odds in order to escape the gallows and win the woman he loves. The opera was a failure in Berlioz's lifetime, but as he himself said: "I cannot help recognising that it has a variety of ideas, an energy and exuberance and a brilliance of colour that I may perhaps never find again".
Tchaikovsky Symphony No I in G minor (Winter Daydreams)
Orchestra of the Mariinsky Theatre, conductor Valery Gergiev
Berlioz Benvenuto Cellini (Act 2)
Vienna State Opera Chorus Concert Association, Vienna Philharmonic, conductor Valery Gergiev
4.00 The Making of Music
2/30. Mother Russia. Fiona Talkington presents full performances of the music James Naughtie mentions in his Radio 4 series charting the relationship between 1,000 years of history and classical music. Glinka inspired a generation of composers to look for a Russian identity in their music. Featuring Tchaikovsky's Second Symphony, along with music by Borodin and Musorgsky.
