Private Passions

on BBC Radio 3

Michael Berkeley's guest today is theatre director Phyllida Lloyd, who divides her time between theatrical and operatic productions. She has directed plays at the Bristol Old Vic, the Manchester Royal Exchange, the Royal Shakespeare Company and the Royal National Theatre, and operas for Opera North, ENO and the Paris Opera. Her production of Poulenc's Dialogue des Carmelites for ENO won rave reviews last year, and she has just directed a new production of Britten's Gloriana. Her musical choices include excerpts from the above operas and from Verdi's Requiem, part of Gilbert and Sullivan's The Mikado, Fiona Shaw reading from Alice in Wonderland and jazz pianist Fats Waller performing Please Take Me Out of Jail.
