Mrs. Hitchman was brought up in private foster homes, poor law institutions, and a Barnardo's home before the term ' Deprived Children ' was known. 'No one considered there was anything deprived about children who were being kept by public money.' She compares her experiences with today's methods which, she thinks, are not yet perfect.
