Director of the National Museum of Science and Technology at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, is best known for his multi-volume social history of the United States. The Americans. Volumes 1 and 2 told the story up to the time of the Civil War. During a recent visit to Washington, IAN MCINTYRE spoke to Professor Boorstin about some of the themes that are emerging as he writes the third volume, which will bring the story up to the present time and conclude the work.
