THE bat is an uncanny creature. It is a hybrid
. between bird and beast; it flies by night, and it can sleep as soundly and as lengthily (mid-autumn to late spring) as any creature alive. From the bat, Sir William Beach Thomas will go on to the other hibernating animals, including hedgehogs, dormice, squirrels, and wasps.
