by Dr. Seth Cudjoe
The priests of the Ewe tribe of Ghana are masters of intricate musical rhythm. In the past, only members of the God-of-Thunder cult were allowed to perform the religious drumming known as Sogba. Seth Cudioe, a Ghanaian trained in Western music, analysed the Sogba drumming and taught it to members of African students' societies at Edinburgh University. With him, they illustrate this description of the drum orchestra and the building up of its rhythmic patterns, leading to a full performance.
