'Erhalt' uns, Herr, bei Deinem Wort.'
('Sustain us, Lord, by Thy blest Word.')
Relayed from The Guildhall School of Music
Singers:
Doris Owens (Contralto) Edward Reach (Tenor) William Barrand (Bass) The Wireless Chorus
Players:
Leslie Woodgate (Organ) The Wireless Orchestra (Trumpet, Two Oboes, and Strings) Conducted by Stanford Robinson
I. Chorus:
Sustain us, Lord, by Thine own Word,
Nor let the Voice of them be heard
The blessed Saviour that revile,
Warring 'gainst Him with craft and guile.
II. Aria (Tenor):
Shed Thy Might from Heav'n upon us,
God Almighty, Lord of Lords!
On Thy Church Thy Grace bestowing.
Them that mock, that sow discords
In a moment overthrowing.
III. Recitative and Chorale (Alto, Tenor):
Our mortal strength alone to sin had yielded,
But Thy right hand our weakness always shielded;
God, Holy Ghost, Thou bringest peace
Thou know'st how snares about Thy Church are bound
And enemies within her walls are found,
Unfaithful Christians, Thy Commandments breaking
Amid Thy people let warfare cease!
Yet we, of Jesu's Love partaking,
Are one with Him ev'n here on earth below.
'Bide with us to our latest breath!
So when at last mankind's relentless foe
From Thine own Grace, from Thee, would fain divide us,
Then may we know Thy loving Hand doth guide us.
Lead us to life, and save from death!
IV. Aria (Bass):
Pride shall be downcast, vanity perish,
Kingdoms and empires shall pass away!
Thou shalt destroy them, wholly, for ever,
Thou shalt o'er throw them, brief is their day;
Earthly dominion profiteth never!
V. Recitative (Tenor):
So let Thy Word and Truth be manifest
And in Thy Grace let all mankind be blest;
So guard Thy Church on earth below
That is the vineyard she hath tended,
Thy goodly fruit may grow;
From ev'ry ill, Thine own hast Thou defended,
So evermore be near us,
And when we cry to Thee, oh hear us.
VI. Chorale:
In Thy great mercy, grant us peace,
Lord God on High who reignest;
For Thou canst bid the tempest cease,
And Thou alone sustainest
Thy people still against Thy foes.
Be gracious to our King and to his house.
And all his Councillors, that they may wisely rule;
Let Thy people praise Thee, keeping Thy Commandments.
Let Thy grace abide with us for evermore. - Amen.
