Britain's special hospitals house many of the most dangerous people in society. The patients have committed the most terrible crimes but are themselves mentally ill. Now the future of such hospitals is in question. Scandals at one, Ashworth, have exposed frightening lapses in security and the problem of providing adequate treatment in a secure setting.
